I have never been one to be crazy into politics. I thought
it was important to pay attention, but I never understood it, never read too
much into it, and never really cared. That might make me a bad American, but
take a cold hard look in the mirror; chances are it makes you a bad one too.
Yeah, I just called you out. So I’ve been careless when it comes to news and
paying attention, or so I thought.
My mom has always been a journalist, so I grew up reading
the newspaper and watching the 10 o’clock news. In fact, watching the news was
the only way I was able to stay up until 10:30 as a kid. If I wasn’t watching
the news, I pretty much had to go to bed, and God-forbid that happen (ironic,
since that’s all I do now). When I dormed at college, I was in this little
bubble, and the only way I knew about anything in the world was through
Facebook, or the sad excuses of headliners on Yahoo News—which I still read.
I’m not sure when it happened. It came out of nowhere. But one
day I looked up from the kitchen table, and I was commenting about the GOP
nominations. I, Marie Gonzalez, an actual young person, was reading the news
paper. Not just the fashion sections either. I was reading the front page and
reading articles about foreign lands and policies that don’t yet affect me.
Also, awhile back, I downloaded a bunch of apps to my phone regarding the 2012
presidential election. And I use them!
Now, I’m not trying to brag, or say I’m better than anyone
else my age because I am apparently paying attention to politics and the news
(snooze, as my dad calls it). But I am saying that I attribute my new found
interest in the media to some weird sensation that this is the first
presidential election I can vote in, and maybe that’s why I care. Before this
gets too patriotic and too serious for everyone, this is the reason I’ve
blogged about this: I have apps on my phone that give news about the election,
and sometimes I can't see the full headline until I click it. So if you’re not
into the election or news or anything, here’s a fun way to get into it. I take
a headline and try to imagine what the rest of it says.

Bahah Love this. Also, what app is this? I am trying to be an informed American... which means I watch the news when I work out.... if I work out.
ReplyDeleteIt's called Election 2012 for the iPhone!
ReplyDeleteYou should begin preparing for the age of 35, when YOU can run for president. So, first, you should form a political party for like-minded folk....you could call it the Snark Party, the Witty Party, the Ha Ha Party, the Jokesters (no, wait, they would call the candidates a Joke.) Well, you get where I am headed. YOU are the person of hilarity, so that's part of the task....to come up with a brilliant party name, then run!
ReplyDeleteYou are a dork, in case you weren't aware. And if it makes you feel any better, for the last month I've begun listening to News Radio 1200. We may both need some form of therapy here soon.
