There’s been a question that’s been boggling my mind for
some time now. I try to ignore it but it just eats and eats away at my
subconscious and I find myself back to it. The question isn’t so much about why
it exists as a question, but rather, why doesn’t anyone address it. It is a
little crude and not what I usually talk about, but eh, whatever. It is this:
What happens in a
post-apocalyptic world where people need to use the bathroom? Where do they go?
How do they not die? More importantly, what about that female time of the
month? (Okay so it’s a weird set of questions instead of just one).
So hear me out on this one. I’ve been watching a lot of
movies and TV shows that take place in a time where it isn’t so safe to go
outside. Most of the time these places don’t have the means to have proper
plumbing or irrigation. I’ve thought about it ever since I’ve been in middle
school and started reading books like this and I’ve had these questions.
For instance, in The
Hunger Games, Katniss spends what
seems like an eternity up in that tree waiting for the other tributes to pass
by. I don’t know, maybe it was only a day. But the question remains, what did
she do? She couldn’t have spent all that time in a tree, getting chased by
tracker-jackets to never go. And what did she do on her time of the month?! The
game-makers are so cruel I doubt they’d allow for female products. And even if
they did, when do you find time to fix everything up? Certainly not when large
fireballs are being flung toward your head!!
It’s also no secret that I love The Walking Dead. Well they do a pretty good job of showing
everything a human could go through whilst in a zombie apocalypse. Lori gave
birth while Maggie and Carl were fighting off Walkers. So I’m pretty sure they
just deal with it and fight zombies while changing their tampon, but I would
really like to see that issue addressed in season 4.
I started the show Revolution
a few nights ago and have been obsessed. But, again, the question on my mind is
what happens to using the restroom when all forms of electricity and
modern-technology die? I mean, in Europe back in the time of the Bubonic
Plague, people would just dump their buckets into streets. I’m sure that’s what
people would have to do in this show, but again, they never show it.
This may or may not have grossed you out. I apologize if it
did, but this really bothers me and since in hindsight I watch a lot of stuff
about the end of the world, these questions just come up. And maybe you should
thank me. I mean, either you’ve thought about it too or you are now fully aware
of a loophole in all writing. In either case I realize this was weird and we don’t
ever have to bring it up again. But if for some reason the power goes out
everywhere permanently, or we live in a world where teenagers have to fight to
the death, or the zombie apocalypse, you’ll wish you had been more prepared by
the TV shows and movies.
