I can’t believe I have lived so close to Austin my whole
life and have only been there once to visit a college. I never saw any of the
city nor did I experience “Austin.” So last week when I had the opportunity to
go with a group of friends, I jumped on the chance. And I’ve got to tell you, I
don’t see what the hype is all about. Maybe I’m just naive because I believe a
city is what you make of it. Sure, every city can’t be New York City, but why
would you want it to be, anyway? In my own Dr. Seuss way, I believe there is no
one “you-er than you.” So cities are what they are because of who makes them
up.
I bring all of this up because I have noticed that people
hate where they live now-a-days (at least in my age group). Everyone is itching
to leave and I can’t tell if it’s because they feel like they can’t fly in
their environment or if it’s because something is wrong with the city they live
in. I choose to believe that it’s because there is something wrong with the
person because it’s just a city, get over it, right? But not entirely. I have
this dilemma with what to believe. I guess if you feel like to further your
life you need to leave, then leave, but why should a city hold you back?
But maybe I think that because I don’t feel like my city is
holding me back. It probably will in the future, but for now I see no need to
leave. While we were driving around, I noticed buildings and people, and weed
and what have you; but it just looked like a city to me. So maybe people should
focus more on bettering the city instead of trying to escape it. It’s not a
city that defines you (speak for yourself, Eminem). But at the same time it’s
not bad to want to leave either. Leave or don’t, I don’t care, either way I’m
happy where I am.
