There comes a time in every sport where a team is just on
the rise. While on their ascension, the team gathers a few half hearted “fans.”
This phenomenon is known as the band-wagon effect. I am sure every single one
of you reading this knows what that is, so I’ll spare you. And if you don’t,
then you probably aren’t old enough to be reading this. And while I’m on that
subject if you aren’t in support of the Spurs, you probably don’t want to keep
reading. It’ll be boring. So go play with the young people who don’t know what
band-wagoners are.
And so this is why I respect the Spurs.
1.
I live in San Antonio and:
2.
There are years when it’s predicted that they
will go all the way, and this was not necessarily that year.
3.
They’re quiet and humble.
So everyone reading this knows all about the Spurs and that’s
not my focus here. I want to point out why I do not consider myself a band -wagon
fan. I do not constantly watch the normal season games, nor do I pay any
attention to them before they make it to the play-offs. But they will always be
the team I root for. Whole-heartedly without any doubt. And this goes back to
all of my beliefs. Even with sports, if I do not support the meaning behind
something, then I cannot support the end result. Por ejemplo, I’ve referred to
this before, but the whole John Mayer thing. Whatever that’s about. And there
are other more serious things. But the less serious things are more fun to talk
about. I don’t support extraterrestrial aliens and their abductions, thus I will
not be friends with them if they ever land here. I don’t support split ends in
my hair, and so I will cut them off. I do not support Toms being worn without
socks, so I look at people funny if they are wearing sock-less Toms.
I could go on forever. But the point is that the Spurs are
really good guys (let’s just turn the other cheek to Tony Parker’s marriage).
So no matter if I’m paying attention or not, the Spurs will always have my vote
(see, the Texas primary elections are today, and I managed to weasel that in
there. Go vote). And this is coming from a self proclaimed band-wagoner. Any other
sport (besides hockey) I band-wagon.
So I wanted to write about this to raise a glass to the most
respectful and hardworking guys in the NBA. Also, let’s just forget that Coach
Pop said “Give me nasty.” He probably didn’t mean it in an un-respectful way
(he totally meant it). And if you aren’t paying attention to the Spurs’ games,
maybe you should be. Win or lose, I’ll still love them. Go Spurs Go.
And as a bonus, I’m going to share with you the cheer my
brother made up for the Spurs during the 1999 season. He’ll probably murder me
if he finds out I shared this, but I just think it’s totally awesome that his 8
year old self made this up: Go Spurs Go, you can really beat ‘em up, Goooooo
Spurs!
And if that doesn't win you over, not much else will.
